Returning to the blog after 10 years

I started this blog in 2011 while working at Climate Central as a data journalist, where I learned to build interactive graphics and maps. After an initial flurry of content, the blog has lay largely dormant.

I’m reviving this space as a home for new content we are producing at Global Fishing Watch, including reposting some of my Linkedin posts. I’ve decided to keep some of the legacy content, though I did remove several posts where the interactive graphics no longer functioned(you can always go to acrhive.org to see old versions of this site).

I’ll also be sharing my other pursuits, primarily bicycle touring and outdoor adventures. You can read about my book—which covers biking across North and South America and the regional impacts of climate change—at rideforclimate.com.

You’ll notice my last post here mentioned starting a “new project” at SkyTruth called Global Fishing Watch. In the decade since, that project has grown into its own organization of over 100 people. I now lead a team of 20 researchers and machine learning experts there. It is where I focus most of my time, and it will also be a dominant theme of this blog.
